Our Responsibility to the Planet & its People

Highly transparent and sound enterprise with reliable and safe hotels assuring peace of mind

Tokyu Hotels is proud of its commitment to openness, honesty and accountability, and as a business we strive to fulfil our ethical, social, and environmental responsibilities. Using the Sustainable Development Goals as a guide against which we can measure our progress, we aim to make our hotels three things: Earth Friendly, Town Friendly, and People Friendly. Here, you can learn about our commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and how it impacts our efforts to be as sustainable a business as possible

Encouraging Compliance

Tokyu Hotels aims to promote and adhere to the highest standards of corporate governance and ethics. Management and employees not only comply with the law, but proactively engage with environmental issues and our social responsibility. To assure full compliance and actively prevent any policy breaches, we maintain a compliance consultation counter and internal reporting system.

Social Impact

As a business, we understand the responsibility, opportunity and privilege we have to make a positive impact in society. We commit to engaging in a variety of social activities in support of our local communities across the country, such as community events like those for sports and music, as well as environmental improvement projects. We want our hotels to represent the areas and communities where they reside, which is why we seek to promote the best aspects of the community as passionately as we do for our hotels. To show our gratitude to the residents who graciously accept our presence, we ensure that all operations have a positive impact on the community at large and locally.

Proactively Supporting the Planet: Our Commitment to Sustainability

Climate action is one of the greatest challenges facing the planet today, and we recognise our responsibility in contributing to meaningful climate action. We are constantly looking for ways to minimise our environmental footprint and impact, and when you stay with Tokyu Hotels, you can be assured that we are doing everything we can to make your time with us as sustainable as possible. In all areas of activity directly related to our company, our employees are working to reduce our impact on the environment. From encouraging the sorting and reusing of resources, promoting the use of Green Coins, and consistently reducing our power and paper usage. Here are a few examples of the efforts we’re most proud of:

Green Coin Program

The Green Coin Program, which we have run since 2001, strives to reduce the global environmental impact that our staff and guests at the hotel can directly control, by taking steps such as decreasing the number of toothbrushes and razors used daily in the hotels. We ask guests to put a Green Coin in a collection box at the front desk for each unused amenity, to which we match donations to two forestation activities: Children’s Forest Program and Tokyu Hotels Green Coin Forest Program - the latter working in cooperation with Tabayama Village, Yamanashi Prefecture.

Children's Forest Program

The Children’s Forest Program aims to inspire children in the Asia-Pacific region and teach them about the importance of nature to continue sustainability efforts with future generations, and to promote global forestation through planting seedlings on school premises and community spaces.

Tokyu Hotels Green Coin Forests Program

The Green Coin Forests Program fosters and sustains trees of the water conservation forest,in cooperation with the local government of Tabayama Village. In these areas, our donations from the Green Coin usage helps to grow trees nearby to rivers and other green spaces.

The Kawasaki King Skyfront Tokyu REI Hotel: The World’s First Hydrogen Hotel Run by Waste

In 2018 we were proud to unveil in Kawasaki the world’s first carbon-neutral hotel powered by hydrogen sourced from waste products. The Hydrogen power is made from plastic waste that is acquired locally from the city of Kawasaki. The hotel’s innovation as in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment's Regional Cooperation and Low-Carbon Hydrogen Technology Demonstration Project, with all power being provided from sustainable resources.

Less Plastic: Biodegradable toothbrushes & Reducing our Plastic Waste

Plastic usage in Tokyu Hotels is an area we see as key for minimising our environmental footprint and being the most sustainable business we can. We have taken a number of steps to reduce the amount of plastic waste we use, leading our industry with innovative ways to cut down on waste. We are Japan’s first hotel to stock biodegradable toothbrushes made from Kaneka Corporation’s ‘Green Planet’ ® material, ending our use of plastic toothbrushes as an amenity in our hotels. These biodegradable toothbrushes are planned to be stocked across all of our hotels in 2022. We have also reduced our use of plastics across hotel rooms, by scrapping complimentary single-use plastic water bottles in favour of water coolers, as well as scrapping plastic amenities for those made from eco-friendly materials. Finally, in our restaurants we have swapped single-use plastic cutlery for recyclable alternatives. The hotel’s cutting-edge innovation represents our commitment to making our hotels as sustainable as possible, for the planet as well as for people.
