Inokashira park celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. Every spring season, many people visit to marvel at the cherry blossom. On weekends, street performers and artists gather to perform at the art market and fair.

Inokashira Benzaiten (B)

The spiritual guardian of music and performing arts

Enshrined on the island of Inokashira Pond Nakanoshima is Inokashira Benzaiten, the patron deity of music and performing arts who was widely worshiped by the people of Edo as the water god of the Kanda river.

This destination is open to visitors year round, but its hibitsu, or 'hidden buddha', is only shown to the public once every 12 years during the Year of the Snake.

Spring water loved by Ieyasu Tokugawa

In ancient times, surrounded by trees on the western edge of Inokashira Pond, there was an underground spring.

Ieyasu Tokugawa, who came to this area for falconry, said that this spring water was of exceptional quality and would often make tea there. Since then this river's water has been called "Ochanomizu", literally meaning 'tea water' because of its quality.

Koen-Dori (D)

A popular area to visit that is always bustling with activity

The main Dori (street) in Kichijoji is called Koen-dori, and runs north to south through the Musashino City portion of Tokyo, near Inokashira Park. On this main street, there are a host of excellent restaurants, including a famous kushiyaki (skewered dishes) restaurant that has been open for 80 years, and it is much loved amongst locals as well as tourists, who together bring the lively atmosphere that is synonymous with Tokyo.

Musashino Hachiman Shrine (E)

Hachimangu Shrine is famous for housing the guardian deity of Kichijoji city.

After the Great Fire of Meireki, people from Monzon-cho, who had lost their homes, relocated to Kichijoji and enshrined Musashino Hachimangu Shrine as the city's guardian. In 789AD, Tamuramaro Sakanoue enshrined the spirit of Usa Hachiman Taisha.

Sun Road (F)

One of Kichijoji's busiest shopping streets, Sun Road features an approximately 300m arcade that runs north to south, from the north exit of Kichijoji Station to Itsukaichi Road. Here, numbers are written on the walls and signboards of the building, and the "Kichijoji place system" which provides the distance from the station in meters is adopted.

Harmonica Alley (G)

Around 100 shops line a traditional yokocho alleyway.

It is said that the name comes from the narrow frontages of the two-storey looking like the mouthpiece of a harmonica. Inokashira Park Zoo(Main Area) (H)

Over 200 species of animals inhabit the zoo.

The area covers approximately 1/3 of Inokashira Park. It is divided into the “Zoo (main area)" with a zoo and sculpture museum, and the “Aquatic life garden (branch area)” with an aquatic museum.
